ZigBee Alliance and Thread Group Join Force
The ZigBee Alliance, an association of companies creating, maintaining and delivering open, global standards for the low-power wireless Internet of Things (IoT), and the Thread Group, an organization focused on making Thread the foundation for the Internet of Things in the home and beyond, today announced that multiple members of both organizations have demonstrated prototypes that run the ZigBee Alliance’s universal language for smart devices on Thread networks. The demonstrations, shown privately at the Thread Group’s Members Meeting in November and set for public display in both organizations’ booths at CES, are a key milestone in their liaison agreement, and highlight accelerating momentum behind an emerging ecosystem of connected products that will interoperate over Thread IP networks using the widely deployed ZigBee language.

Zhaga Book 13 - LED Drivers - for Download, Certified Products Database Improved
The Zhaga Consortium has published a new specification for LED drivers that are used in combination with separate LED modules. The introduction of standardized form-factors for LED drivers is expected to bring significant benefits for LED luminaire makers, including enhanced second-sourcing options and the ability to interchange different LED modules and drivers independently. Furthermore, Zhaga has updated its database of certified products and built a new search engine that allows LED luminaire makers and other users to find and compare components.

Zhaga Publishes Book 11 Specification for Small LED Spotlight Modules
The Zhaga Consortium has published Book 11, a new specification that describes circular LED modules with a maximum diameter of 35 mm that are suitable for spotlighting and related applications. A Book 11 module requires a separate LED driver.

Consumer lighting applications are addressed by this latest LED lighting component specification from Zhaga, which describes small LED modules with a ring-shaped light-emitting surface.

Zhaga Consortium Starts Work on New Specification for COB LED Arrays
In response to feedback from a broad range of stakeholders, the Zhaga Consortium, which develops specifications for interchangeable LED light sources, is now working on a new Book that will include Chip-on-Board (COB) LED arrays. The new Zhaga Book will specify a family of six rectangular or square LED modules with different dimensions.

Zhaga Announces Several Updates and Reports About Activities in their Latest June Newsletter
June has been a very busy month for Zhaga, with the consortium’s first meeting in China combined with an open session for government officials and representatives from China’s lighting industry. Meanwhile, the first products have now been certified for Zhaga interface specification Books 4, 7 and 8, while Zhaga has signed a liaison with the Global Lighting Association.

LEDOTRON: Digital Dimming Technology for a New World of Lighting Convenience
LEDOTRON is the name of the new digital standard for dimming systems designed for LED and compact fluorescent retrofit lamps. The innovative digital dimming and regulation technology was developed in collaboration with OSRAM and is to be passed as the IEC 62756-1 standard end of this year.The participants at the LEDOTRON press conference at the BAU trade fair in Munich in January 2013 were presented with the advantages of the LEDOTRON technology.

SEMI's LED Standards Committee HB-LED Standard Published
After the formation of the high-brightness light-emitting diode (HB-LED) Standards Committee in November 2010 the committee was working hard on HB standards. The committee is happy to announce that it now has approved its first standard, SEMI HB1: Specifications for Sapphire Wafers Intended for Use for Manufacturing High Brightness-Light Emitting Diode Devices. Developed by the HB-LED Wafer Task Force, SEMI HB1 defines and specifies the physical geometry of 150 mm diameter sapphire wafers used in HB-LED manufacturing. HB1 covers dimensional, wafer preparation, and crystallographic orientation characteristics, as well as the appropriate measurement methods. The document was approved by the HB-LED Committee during the North America Fall 2012 meetings, recently completed procedural review and will be published soon.

EMerge Alliance Releases Version 1.1 of Occupied Space Standard
Progress continues toward integrated standards for DC microgrids in buildings SAN RAMON, CALIF. (October 2, 2012) – The EMerge Alliance – an open industry association leading the rapid adoption of safe direct-current (DC) power distribution standards for commercial buildings – today announced it has updated the EMerge Alliance Occupied Space standard, the first application platform model for the utilization of low-voltage DC power in commercial interiors. The EMerge Alliance Occupied Space standard creates an integrated, open platform for power, interior infrastructures, controls and a wide variety of peripheral devices to facilitate the hybrid use of AC and DC power within commercial buildings. Version 1.1 includes several important updates to voltage limits, recommended cable sizes and other requirements to assist companies developing products when using the standard. These changes are backwards compatible and maximize the interoperability and efficiency of EMerge Alliance Registered products.

JEDEC Publishes First International Thermal Testing Standards for LEDs
JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in the development of standards for the microelectronics industry, today announced the publication of a new series of standards for component level testing of high-brightness/power LEDs. Development within JEDEC’s JC-15 Committee involved LED industry leaders, and resulted in the new JESD51-5x series of standards aimed at thermal characterization of power LED components. The series is in compliance with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE)’s existing LED measurement recommendations.

This guiding paper is intended to help bring clarity by introducing a universal set of quality criteria that are recently described in two IEC/PAS documents. As a user of LED luminaires it is important to apply the same set of standardised and therefore comparable quality criteria when evaluating manufacturer’s claims. SEMI International Standards Program Forms High-Brightness LED Standards Committee
SEMI announced today the formation of a high-brightness light-emitting diode (HB-LED) Standards Committee. The SEMI International Standards Committee approved the petition for the HB-LED Standards Committee on November 4, 2010. The Committee met for the first time on November 11 and initiated standards Task Forces on wafers, carriers, assembly and automation. The Committee and Task Forces are comprised of industry leaders in HB-LED devices, sapphire wafers, MOCVD wafer processing, and key equipment and materials suppliers to the LED industry.
